Global Federation of Patient Organisations

Healthcare where people live

The Global Federation of Patient Organisations is created as a professional body and community of patient organisations.

It is designed to acknowledge their credibility and role in health systems, and strengthen the leadership, and impact of patient organisations in health and research.

There are many coalitions, focused primarily on advocacy.

The Federation is different.

Working across four strategic pillars, it will focus on professionalisation, leadership, and sector development. Through initiatives such as global standards and accreditation, the Institute for Patient Organisation Leadership, an ethics and independence framework, a patient organisation observatory generating sector insights, and a global congress and communities of practice, the network will support patient organisations to operate effectively, ethically, and sustainably while recognising the distinctive leadership and expertise that patient communities bring to healthcare.

Sharing Patient-Led Models & Community Programmes: Intersection with health professional networks

Membership

Patient organisations already hold deep credibility, trust, and legitimacy within their communities. They are often the first place people turn for support, understanding, and advocacy.

The Federation does not seek to grant credibility or define legitimacy. It recognises that these already exist.

Instead, membership provides a platform to strengthen, connect, and amplify the work of patient organisations, supporting leaders to share experience, collaborate across borders and disciplines, and further advance the role of patient organisations in health systems and research.

Membership Features

Membership in the network is open exclusively to patient organisations. Eligible members include patient-led organisations and charities representing people living with specific conditions or health challenges, and national, regional, or international patient alliances and umbrella organisations. Information on tiered membership fees, designed to reflect organisational size and context, is available upon request.

The fourth pillar

The Federation’s fourth pillar, Person-, Family- and Community-Centred Care sits at the heart of what many stakeholders across the health ecosystem seek to achieve. It is the space where our collective efforts intersect and where the Global Federation for Patient Organisations works to build alliances and develop common initiatives with partners across the health sector.

External stakeholders—such as health professionals, researchers, and institutions—may engage with the network through collaboration and partnership initiatives, while membership itself remains centred on patient organisations.

Engagement Opportunities

Members can engage in a range of activities designed to support learning, collaboration, and leadership across the patient organisation community. These opportunities include participation in working groups, leadership programmes, communities of practice, research dialogues, and sector initiatives that connect organisations globally and strengthen their collective impact.

8

Activity Areas

Activity areas organise the key ways members can engage with the network. They reflect the practical areas of support offered to patient organisations, including governance and standards, leadership development, knowledge exchange, partnerships, and sector insights. Each area provides opportunities for members to learn, collaborate, and contribute to strengthening the patient organisation sector.

4

Pillars of Focus

The pillars of focus represent the broader strategic priorities that guide the network’s work. They bring together related activity areas under shared goals, such as strengthening trusted organisational practice, supporting leadership and capacity development, advancing knowledge and partnerships, and promoting person-, family-, and community-centred care.

The Federation is hosted by CCDR.

CCDR is a nurse-led international NGO. Nurses work across disciplines and health system settings while maintaining close and sustained relationships with patients and families. This vantage point enables nurses to see how physical, emotional, and social factors shape health outcomes and to recognise the critical role that patient organisations play in supporting individuals and communities. By bringing this holistic perspective, commitment to patient led health services, and space for ethical reflection, CCDR aims to support a Federation that strengthens patient organisations while fostering constructive partnerships with the wider health system.
